Adjustment in Roles for Philip Barr and Katie Allan

Adjustment in Roles for Philip Barr and Katie Allan

Many in the College community will know that Philip Barr, who has been serving as Senior Tutor at St Paul’s for the last three years, has chosen to reduce his workload from full-time to three days per week. Philip, who was previously the Master of the Lower School at Sydney Grammar School, continues to make an outstanding contribution to the College, but with the reduction of his work days the burden of his role must correspondingly lessen. The role of Senior Tutor has encompassed oversight of students’ academic progress, raising the intellectual life of the College as well as recruiting and interviewing prospective students. Since October 2020 Philip has been assisted by Katie Allan who expanded her role from her existing position of Associate Dean of Graduate House to also be Deputy Senior Tutor. Katie is soon to complete her Doctorate in Law from the University of Oxford and has a wealth of experience in academic oversight, pastoral care, and tertiary engagement.

In order to more clearly delineate the responsibilities, in 2021 Philip will have a new title, Head of Admissions, and will continue his responsibility for recruitment and interviewing prospective students. Philip’s presence and engagement with the College and students will in no way lessen this year. He will continue to be a member of the senior management team, run tours and Open Days, organise our special dinners and in 2021 will step up our visits to schools. Katie will become the Senior Tutor and take on responsibility for the College’s academic and intellectual life. As Senior Tutor, Katie will serve both our undergraduate and graduate communities in overseeing the tutorial programme and helping our students achieve their very best. Katie’s new role will encompass supporting graduate students and assisting the Dean of Graduate House. St Paul’s is blessed to have such gifted and pastorally hearted staff as Philip and Katie and we look forward to their continued contribution to our community life in these adjusted roles.
