Academic Results for 2021

Joyful news for Paul’s about last year’s academic results with 116 students – 99 undergraduate students and 17 postgraduate students – achieving a Distinction or High Distinction average in Semester 2. This is 37% of our undergraduate body, and 48% of our postgraduate coursework students! Of our top 10 undergraduate performers, five were Freshmen in their first year of university study: Mr Tommy Lu (Bachelor of Advanced Computing/Bachelor of Science), Mr Jack Holt (Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce), Mr Simon Toscan (Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Advanced Studies), Mr Riley Jones (Bachelor of Advanced Computing/Bachelor of Science), and Mr Aakash Singh (Bachelor of Engineering Hons (Civil)/Bachelor of Design Architecture) – all receiving a high distinction average. The undergraduate average mark was 70.6, and our postgraduate coursework students averaged 72.9.   This is a fantastic achievement by all our students, particularly considering that all but four weeks of the semester took place

New timber for an old hall

January is a time for major maintenance around the College and the Dining Hall and Kitchens are the focus. Every year the Foundation tops up the maintenance budget for heritage works and this is all made possible by the generosity of Foundation donors. The projects include the dining hall floor, new table tops and chair refurbishments. In the kitchen new vinyl is being laid and a new dish washer comes in after that. Those interested in donating an Australian hardwood floor board can do so right now. We are looking for contributions towards this project which includes the floor, dining chairs repair and (artisan-made) new tops for the tables. Australia Day honour

Mr Niels Bowen (in College 1967-70) has been awarded an OAM in the 2022 Australia Day Honours. Niels is a pharmacist and leader in the health care industry as founder of Chemist Outlet and Pharmacy by Mail. Niels has also been a benefactor to many causes including the College, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the University of Sydney in particular the refurbishment of the Pharmacy Building 2006-08. It was great to see Niels back at College for a visit early last year and the College community extends it appreciation and congratulations on this Australia Day honour.

Sem 2 Palladian Cup flashes of potential

The back half of the year’s Palladian events was filled with a mix of outstanding works, and unrefined gems. The College finished equal fourth place alongside The Women’s College. The highlight of the semester for the College was Palladian Art. Senior, Ethan Tsui, scored 2nd place overall for his piece, ‘Locus Amoenus No. IX’, while Freshman, James Rossiter, submitted a fantastic work, ‘Disenfranchised’, which was unlucky not to place. Our drama and instrumental ensembles were fantastic, and showcased the creativity amongst our residents. Graduate House member, Jack Stephens, will take over as Director of Music in 2022, and has big plans, with enthusiasm to match, for the College’s musical potential. Watch this space.

Rawson sport Sem 2

Rawson sport returned to College in a big way in semester 2. The Covid-induced hiatus meant that training and general preparation for all sports proved difficult, and often required execution of a reduced capacity. With five sporting campaigns to undertake in the best part of a month, the Paulines had their work cut out for them. Compounding the log-jam of Rawson events was the timing of the semester. The state opened back up, assessment crunch time loomed, the Palladian Cup resumed, and important College social events were reinstated to the calendar following the ease of restrictions. The term ‘intense’ was an understatement, not to mention, some men convened and competed in multiple sports… Our second place position on the overall Rawson Cup ladder at the cessation of the first semester meant that serious groundwork had to be made in order to compete with the Androvians, and keep John’s and Wesley

2022 Student Leadership

Student leadership is an important aspect of collegiate life and at St Paul’s this is no exception. In November the Students Club elected their 2022 committee: Mr Henry Hughes [BPM II], Mr Sebastian Shanahan [BComm/LLB II], Mr Nicholas Jones [BComm/BAdvStudies II], Mr Steven Parras [BComm II], Mr Hayden Fleming [BA/LLB II], Mr Mitchell Cassie [BSports&ExMgmt II] and Mr Tom Nivison [BBus/BSc II]. The new committee takes over in January. Earlier the Middle Common Room, which is the student membership of Graduate House, elected their third Executive: Mr Hugh Schroder [MD I], Mr Jethro Mahon [MComm I], Mr Vivek Chopra [JD I], Miss Eliza Santalucia [DDM I] and Mr Will McManus [no info on Start Rez!].
