Rawson Rowing Threepeat; Athletics go Back to Back!

By Harry Croker, Dean of Undergraduates The College VIII has once again embodied the old adage, hard work beats talent when talent won’t work hard, notching up their third consecutive victory. Driven by fourth year and rowing stalwart, Mr Nick Trotter, and fellow convenor, second year Mr Henry Blackwell, the crew clocked up 137 training sessions this year. Hard and uncompromising training has been the formula for the crew’s success since the sport’s overhaul in 2020. The training made the crew comfortable in the uncomfortable, which was certainly necessary on the day of the race. Thursday 6 October was drizzly and cold out at the foot of the mountains, but the Sydney International Regatta Centre had been a venue of good fortune over the past couple of years, and this VIII was never going to let a bit of rain stand in the way of a threepeat. Valediction after a remarkable College experience

The annual Valedictory Dinner was held on 26 October and celebrated the contributions to the life of St Paul’s by 58 valedictorians. Speeches honouring those departing were given by Messrs Jack Attenborough, Tom Burrow, Charlie Cox, Tom Kirkland, Finn Murdoch and Jack Towers. A theme emerged that being at Paul’s was “the best years of my life” which will resonate with many alumni.  Tom invoked those remaining to “be a sponge” and soak up everything that the College has to offer. The night was “Paul’s at its best” to quote Head of Admissions, Mr Philip Barr. The College congratulates its 2022 valedictorians and thanks them for the impact they have had on the life of Paul’s and most importantly for the fellowship they have formed with their peers and younger Paulines. Also during the night a special evensong was held as the Valedictory Service with wonderful support from our organist,

Graduate House Celebrations

There is an air of excitement in our graduate community as the academic year end approaches. With the Middle Common Room Formal tonight (27 October), a Halloween party on the weekend and Christmas Feast approaching, Graduate House provides its members a great calendar of social events that help balance the heavy load of study, pracs, tutorials, assignments and examinations that our post-grads have to face daily. Tying academic and social together is one way of celebrating life at St Paul’s College. With an unusually high number of past Amy Louise Hart Scholars remaining in residence this year, only one award was made for Semester 2, to bring the society back up to its full complement of eleven awardees. Mr Ryan Cheng, was presented with his Amy Louise Hart Scholar’s Hood at formal dinner on 19 September. As this dinner occurred on the day of the funeral for Her Late Majesty,

‘What are these wounds in the midst of our hands?’

The College Choir Concert – Semester 2 The Choir of St Paul’s College presents Buxtehude’s 1680 cantata Membra Jesu Nostri ‘Ad manus’ (‘to the hands’), a sung devotion to the ‘limbs of Jesus’, followed by Caroline Shaw’s response to Buxtehude’s cantata. Shaw’s work focuses on America’s promise of welcome as inscribed at the Statue of Liberty with the words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” and the reality of the current refugee crisis and issues surrounding immigration. The concert finishes with Fauré’s poignant Requiem bringing upon a prevailing mood of peacefulness and serenity. Date | Friday 28 October 8pm Tickets | CLICK HERE
