In July Dr James Renwick CSC SC (in College 1983-84, Sub-Warden 1992-93) was appointed the Deputy Judge Advocate General (DJAG) for the Royal Australian Navy and promoted to the rank of Commodore. James is a Sydney barrister and a former independent National Security Legislation Monitor, 2017-20, and is an honorary professor at ANU and a Visiting Military Fellow at ADFA. In 2007-08 he was a Fulbright Professional Scholar at the School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC. In 2013 he deployed on active service to Afghanistan. The functions of JAG include making procedural rules for Defence Force tribunals, providing the final legal review of proceedings within the ADF, participating in the appointment to ADF judicial posts, and reporting upon the operation of laws relating to the discipline of the ADF.
