‘What are these wounds in the midst of our hands?’
The College Choir Concert – Semester 2
The Choir of St Paul’s College presents Buxtehude’s 1680 cantata Membra Jesu Nostri ‘Ad manus’ (‘to the hands’), a sung devotion to the ‘limbs of Jesus’, followed by Caroline Shaw’s response to Buxtehude’s cantata. Shaw’s work focuses on America’s promise of welcome as inscribed at the Statue of Liberty with the words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” and the reality of the current refugee crisis and issues surrounding immigration. The concert finishes with Fauré’s poignant Requiem bringing upon a prevailing mood of peacefulness and serenity.
